EQUALITY LABS IS THE FIRST SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN/GENDER NON-CONFORMING/TRANS TECHNOLOGY STARTUP
Equality Labs is a South Asian American human rights start-up working at the intersection of story, art, and security. We support movements dealing with intractable systems of oppression through a collaborative model that connects multiple disciplines and platforms to maximize potential for change and engender workable, community driven solutions to the most pressing challenges we face. We are also the first South women, gender non conforming, and trans technology collective whose leadership is from South Asian cultural and religious minority communities. This includes Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians.
Equality Lab’s vision is to center the leadership of South Asian minority groups in the ongoing redefinition of South Asian identity in the United States, across the Diaspora, and in our home countries, from India to Tamil Eelam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, and Pakistan. Our membership includes Dalits (formerly known as the “Untouchable” caste in India), Adivasi (indigenous), Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian South Asian women who live on the margins of mainstream South Asian culture. While we are homogenized through the process of racialization into the category “South Asian” (and therefore share many of the daily challenges of racism), the reality is that this label renders invisible the violence (including sexual) Dalit, Muslim, Christian, and Adivasi immigrants have faced in our home countries because of Hindu fundamentalism
We believe story is one of the most important units of social change and is the core to our research endeavors. Through story we know ourselves, know each other and can build a shared vision of the world. We work with movements to help tell the stories that inspire and help birth a new vision of the world.
We believe artist belong at the table of change. Artists through socially engaged art help to inspire, build community, and make a heart connection to the issues that matter the most. Our art projects impact communities through both process and product.
We Believe that the right to privacy, assemble, and free speech are threatened by global surveillance by countries around the world. We support activists around the world to help them protect themselves and establish secure communications, devices, and network access.
